How to Clean A Litter Box

Cleaning a litter box is a daily process. It is not the most exciting job there is, but it is indeed necessary. Here is a simple step by step instructional guide on how to clean a litter box.

Get a scooper and a plastic bag and to economize you can also use plastic grocery bags to put your cat's waste in. Take the scooper in one hand and the plasic bag in the other. Use the scooper to sift through the cat litter to find waste and clumpy litter. As you find feces scoop the feces with the scooper and put it into the plastic bag.

Continue to do this until the litter box is completely cleaned. Be sure to put all the clumps into the bags as well. After this is done, dispose of the plastic bags and clean your scooper for the next time it is needed. This was the daily cleaning process, the other cleaning is the complete cleaning process which requires you to dispose of the litter completely and replace it with new litter into the litter box. To do this:

Pick up the litter box and pour the entire load of litter into a plastic or garbage bag, Just tossing the litter outside is not a very good idea because it can cause other health related problems. Not only that, disposing of the litter outside will attract flies and bugs. After pouring out the litter into the plastic bag, you can proceed with the cleaning by washing out the litter box with a disinfectant like Lysol Concentrated and hot water be sure that the litter box is thoroughly clean and then rinse and dry with a paper towel.

After drying the box, place it back in the same area. Get your fresh cat litter and pour it into the litter box. Be sure to cover the entire bottom of the box and fill it up at least half way so that when your cat scratches, there will be enough to cover the waste. Another helpful hint is to use backing soda. This is a good way to keep down odor between cleaning.

Some busy cat owners may choose to use a different method to keep their litter boxes clean by using an automatic cleaning litter box. Using this methiod cuts down on the amount of times that you will need to clean the litter box yourself. It would be a great investment if you are a busy cat owner. Even if you're not. Doing some research is also good to in order for you to decide on which automatic item to buy. Always remember to wash out your litter box at least a couple times a week with disinfectant and hot water.
